This paper aims to compare and examine the process of adolescents seeking self-identity through the Ten Ox-herding pictures, A fundamental task in modern society is to make efforts for adolescents to grow into mature social beings by forming positive values and ego through the establishment of self-identity, a developmental task for adolescents. The ten oxherding pictures (ä¨éÚÓñ) are 10 pictures that depict the 10 processes of healing and asceticism to find the true self.
a ten-stage journey of re-discovering one¡¯s true nature using the metaphor of taming an ox. The process of establishing adolescent self-identity and discovering one¡¯s true self is akin to the sequential journey depicted in the Ten Ox-herding pictures of Buddhism, a journey of healing and practice that begins with seeking enlightenment.
This paper examines the correlation between Ten Ox-herding pictures of Gwakam and adolescents¡¯ opportunities to achieve self-reflection, healing, and wisdom for living in the world. Through analysing the Ten Ox-herding pictures, the paper aims to provide insight into how adolescents discover the pathway to self-discovery and personal growth. It is postulated that the Ten Ox-herding path, wherein one searches for and tames the lost cow while eventually being ¡®one¡¯ with the cow, leads to the restoration of the true self upon enlightenment, and subsequently returning to save other beings from the cycle of birth and death, can have a positive impact on the establishment of adolescents' identity. This paper can be deemed significant as it provides guidance to adolescents through the Ten Ox-herding path, guiding adolescents to seek a righteous life by providing them with a direction in life and thereby facilitating the development of healthy self-identity.
